Heartbreak in Pasco: Storm Fall Short in Extra-Inning Marathon
Lights Out but Left Behind: Statton and Hockman Dazzle in Pasco
PASCO, Wash. — It was a day defined by "what ifs" and gritty performances on the mound for the Chemeketa Storm. Despite a spectacular showing from the pitching staff, the Storm (1-7) left Columbia Basin College (CBC) with two narrow losses, including a 12-inning defensive battle that pushed both teams to their limits.
Game 1: Defensive Miscues Costly in Opener
Final: Columbia Basin 5, Chemeketa 3
The first leg of the doubleheader was a game of missed opportunities. Chemeketa jumped out to an early lead in the second inning when D. Rice lined an RBI single to left field to plate W. Hooper. However, the lead was short-lived as defensive struggles began to haunt the Storm.
Columbia Basin managed to tie the game in the bottom of the second without a single RBI, scoring on a sequence that involved two Chemeketa errors. The game remained deadlocked until the fifth, when CBC exploded for three runs on three consecutive RBI singles to take a 4-1 lead.
-
S. Tsuma provided a late spark, recording a triple and later an RBI single in the eighth to pull the Storm within one run.
-
J. Bowen was a bright spot in relief, throwing three innings of hitless baseball.
-
The Difference: Four errors by the Storm defense allowed two unearned runs, proving to be the margin of defeat.
Game 2: A Pitching Masterpiece Ends in the 12th
Final: Columbia Basin 2, Chemeketa 1 (12 Innings)
If Game 1 was about miscues, Game 2 was a testament to the Storm's pitching depth. R. Hockman set the tone with six strong innings, allowing just one run. He was followed by an absolutely untouchable performance from P. Statton, who silenced the CBC bats for five innings, surrendering zero hits and striking out four.
The Storm offense struggled to solve CBC's pitching but found life in the ninth inning. With the bases loaded and the season's first road win in sight, S. Tsuma scored on an error to tie the game at 1-1.
The marathon continued into the 12th inning. After Chemeketa went quiet in the top half, CBC finally broke through against reliever A. Yost, using an RBI single to right field to end the contest.
-
K. Sheller led the offense with two hits, including a triple.
-
T. Sheldon contributed two hits and a successful sacrifice bunt to keep the pressure on.
-
Pitching Dominance: Hockman and Statton combined for 11 innings of one-run ball, a performance that usually results in a victory.
