Redemption at Roto-Rooter: Storm Rebound for Doubleheader Split
The Strike Zone Factor: Hanson’s Efficiency Erases Game 1 Free Passes
SALEM, Ore. — Baseball is often a game of balance: for every heartbreaking collapse, there is a dominant masterpiece waiting in the wings. That was the story for the Chemeketa Storm on Sunday afternoon. After watching a late lead evaporate in a frustrating 6-4 loss in the opener, the Storm showed incredible resilience to shut out Southwestern Oregon 2-0 in the nightcap, earning a hard-fought split at Roto-Rooter Park.
Game 1: The One That Got Away
Final: Southwestern Oregon 6, Chemeketa 4
For six innings, the Storm looked completely in control. Starting pitcher R. Hockman was masterful, carving through the Lakers' lineup and allowing only two hits during his tenure on the mound. Chemeketa's offense backed him early in the second inning when D. Rice and W. Hooper delivered back-to-back RBI singles to jump out to a 2-0 lead.
However, the wheels came off in a bizarre seventh inning. A series of self-inflicted wounds—including three balks and a wild pitch—allowed Southwestern Oregon to tie the game and eventually take the lead without needing much contact.
The Storm didn't go quietly, however. Down 6-2 in the bottom of the ninth, pinch-hitter D. Cuff stepped to the plate with ice in his veins, lacing a two-RBI single to cut the deficit to two. Unfortunately, the rally stalled there, leaving Chemeketa with a bitter pill to swallow.
Game 2: Hanson's Masterclass
Final: Chemeketa 2, Southwestern Oregon 0
If Game 1 was defined by chaos, Game 2 was defined by total, clinical composure. D. Hanson took the mound for the Storm, on his 21rst birthday, and delivered arguably the best pitching performance of the season.
Hanson tossed a complete-game shutout, scattering just three hits over seven innings. Perhaps most impressively, he didn't walk a single batter, forcing the Lakers to earn every inch of the basepath. He needed only 89 pitches to dismantle the SWOCC offense.
The Storm's bats provided the necessary support in the fifth inning. N. Crawford broke the scoreless deadlock with a clutch RBI double that scored D. Rice. Moments later, Crawford showed his baserunning savvy by scoring on a wild pitch to double the lead. That was all Hanson needed to slam the door.
| Game 2 Standouts | Stats |
| D. Hanson (P) | 7.0 IP, 0 R, 3 H, 0 BB, 4 K |
| N. Crawford (1B) | 1-for-2, RBI Double, 1 Run, 1 SB |
| C. Saunders (LF) | 2-for-2 (Perfect at the plate) |
The Takeaway
While the Storm will certainly rue the mistakes of the first game, the second game proved that this team has the "short memory" required for a long season. Leading the way was a defense that tightened up significantly in the finale and a pitching staff that continues to prove it can shut down high-powered offenses.
Chemeketa moves forward with the momentum of a shutout victory, proving that when they play clean, fundamental baseball, they are as dangerous as anyone in the NWAC.
