Power Surge in Yakima: Storm Slugging Not Enough to Overcome Offensive Barrage
Home Run Derby in Yakima: Storm Launch 6 Long Balls in Sunday Doubleheader
YAKIMA, Wash. — If you like home runs, Yakima was the place to be on Sunday. The Chemeketa Storm showcased some serious muscle at the plate during their doubleheader, launching a combined six home runs across two games. However, despite the fireworks, the Storm couldn't quite dampen the bats of Wenatchee Valley and Treasure Valley, dropping both contests in a high-scoring Sunday showcase.
While the win column didn't move in the Storm's favor, the offensive identity of this team is becoming crystal clear: they can hit the long ball against anyone.
Game 1: The Long-Ball Derby
Final: Wenatchee Valley 10, Chemeketa 7
The morning set against Wenatchee Valley was a classic back-and-forth slugfest. Chemeketa matched the Knights blow for blow in the early innings, but a four-run third by Wenatchee proved to be the difference-maker.
The Storm's bats were electric, accounting for three home runs. Laney Deloe and Layni Noonkester both cleared the fences, while Ava Woods added a solo blast of her own to go along with a double. Meaghan Trissell was a constant thorn in the Knights' side, finishing a perfect 3-for-4 at the plate.
Despite out-hitting Wenatchee 13-15 (wait, checking stats... actually 9 hits to 15), the Storm stayed within striking distance until the final frame. The Knights utilized their own power, launching four home runs to narrowly edge out the Chemeketa rally.
Game 2: The Noonkester Show
Final: Treasure Valley 14, Chemeketa 6
In the afternoon cap, the Storm faced a relentless Treasure Valley lineup. While the final score seems lopsided, the story of the game was Layni Noonkester. The Storm shortstop put on a clinic, launching two home runs and driving in four of Chemeketa's six runs.
Kaylee Caraphina also joined the home run club with a solo shot, marking a weekend where the Storm's power was on full display.
However, Treasure Valley's offense was firing on all cylinders, racking up 14 hits. A seven-run fourth inning by the Chukars broke the game open. Chemeketa's defense struggled at times, committing four errors that allowed Treasure Valley to extend innings and capitalize on base runners.
Weekend Stat Sheet Heroes
The Storm showed they have one of the most dangerous middle-of-the-order lineups in the NWAC right now.
| Player | Stats (Combined) | The Impact |
| Layni Noonkester | 3 HR, 4 RBI, 4 Hits | A legitimate "player of the week" caliber performance. |
| Kaylee Caraphina | 1 HR, 4 Hits, 2 RBI | Provided consistent contact and veteran leadership. |
| Maddy Trissell | 4 Hits, 1 RBI | The Storm's most consistent table-setter this weekend. |
| Laney Deloe | 1 HR, 3 Hits, 3 RBI | Contributed significant power from the middle of the order. |
The Silver Lining
It's rare to see a team hit six home runs in a single day and come away without a win, but that speaks to the high-level competition in Yakima this weekend. The Storm proved that their offensive ceiling is incredibly high. If the pitching staff can find a bit more consistency and the defense can tighten up those unforced errors, this power-hitting lineup is going to be a nightmare for opponents in conference play.
