Breaking the Ice: Storm Distance Crew Records Early PBs in McMinnville
Top 10 Finish: Storm Relay Squad Posts Sub-5:00 Time at Linfield
McMINNVILLE, Ore. — The "Icebreaker" Invitational at Linfield University is rarely just a name; it's a physical reality for track athletes shaking off the winter rust in the unpredictable Oregon spring. But for the Chemeketa Storm women's track team, the frost didn't stand a chance against a wave of early-season momentum.
Competing against a deep field of NWAC rivals and NCAA Division III powerhouses, the Storm used the March 6–7 weekend to establish a gritty baseline for the 2026 outdoor season, highlighted by middle-distance breakthroughs and a top-10 relay finish.
Distance Gains: The PB Pursuit
The story of the weekend sat squarely in the 800-meter run. While early-season meets are often about "finding your legs," Andrea Maciel Rodriguez and Mariela Soto Garcia decided they were already in mid-season form.
Both runners clocked Personal Bests (PBs) in the two-lap sprint, a rare feat for a season opener. Maciel Rodriguez crossed the line at 2:51.11, while Soto Garcia gutted out a 3:06.92. Leading the Storm pack in the event was Sophia Harris, whose 2:44.54 (25th place) provided a strong anchor for the team's distance identity.
The Quarter-Mile Grind
In the 400m dash—arguably the most grueling sprint on the track—the Storm showed poise. Fernanda Robles led the way with a tactical 1:11.57, securing a 14th-place finish. Teammate Gisselle Andrade-Jacobo followed in 17th with a 1:25.59, gaining valuable experience in a race that requires a perfect blend of speed and aerobic capacity.
Relay Resilience: Sub-5:00 Finale
The meet concluded with the 4x400m relay, the traditional "crowd-pleaser" that tests a team's depth and coordination. The quartet of Sophia Harris, Mariela Soto Garcia, Fernanda Robles, and Andrea Maciel Rodriguez proved their conditioning is ahead of schedule.
The team notched a 9th-place finish with a time of 4:58.70. Breaking the five-minute barrier this early in the year—especially while juggling multiple individual events—signals that the Storm's relay chemistry is already a potent weapon.

Looking Ahead
With the "ice" officially broken, the Storm will look to integrate roster mainstays Alyssa Collins, Skylar Sitser, and Joseline Tapia-Guerra in the coming weeks. If the opening weekend was any indication, the middle-distance squad is ready to shave even more time off those fresh PBs as the weather warms.
