Heartbreak in Roseburg: Storm Fall Just Short in Valentine's Day Thriller
Giant Killers in the Making: Storm Nearly Topple Nationally-Ranked Riverhawks
ROSEBURG, Ore. — In a game that was as intense as any postseason matchup, the Chemeketa Storm (19-12, 8-9) pushed the powerhouse Umpqua Riverhawks (29-3, 15-2) to the absolute brink on Saturday afternoon. Despite leading for the majority of the contest, the Storm suffered a crushing 65-63 defeat as a late fourth-quarter rally by the Riverhawks erased Chemeketa's hard-earned advantage.
The Storm played nearly flawless basketball for three quarters, out-executing the nationally-ranked Riverhawks on their home floor, only to see the game slip away in the final ten minutes.
Three Quarters of Excellence
Chemeketa came out with a point to prove. The Storm defense was suffocating in the first quarter, holding Umpqua to just 11 points and building an early lead. Ella Holwege was a force of nature, attacking the rim and hitting timely jumpers to finish with a team-high 19 points and 7 rebounds.
By halftime, the Storm held a 37-28 lead, and they maintained that momentum through the third. Patricia Mike logged all 40 minutes of the contest, grinding out 15 points and keeping the Storm offense composed under Umpqua's mounting pressure. Entering the fourth quarter, Chemeketa held a 57-48 lead and appeared poised for a massive upset.
The Rebounding Gap
While Chemeketa shot a better percentage from the field (41% to Umpqua's 37.5%) and from three-point range, the game was ultimately decided in the paint. Umpqua's Kaelyn Shoemaker was the difference-maker, putting up a staggering 28 points and 20 rebounds.
The Riverhawks' ability to generate second-chance opportunities allowed them to stay alive when their shots weren't falling. Umpqua out-rebounded the Storm 45-22, a margin that finally took its toll in the final period.
| Statistic | Chemeketa Storm | Umpqua Riverhawks |
| Field Goal % | 41.0% | 37.5% |
| 3-Point % | 31.6% | 24.0% |
| Total Rebounds | 22 | 45 |
| Offensive Rebounds | 4 | 18 |
A Final Stand
The fourth quarter proved to be a defensive struggle. Chemeketa's offense, so potent through thirty minutes, cooled off significantly, managing only 6 points in the final frame. Umpqua capitalized, slowly chipping away at the lead until they finally pulled ahead in the closing moments.
Mia Fullbright and Ava Rubio both finished with 11 points, providing the secondary scoring the Storm needed. Fullbright's efficiency (5-of-7 from the floor) and Rubio's grit on the perimeter were hallmarks of the Storm's effort, but Umpqua's late surge was enough to steal the victory.
The Road Ahead
Though the result wasn't what the Storm wanted, the performance served as a loud reminder that Chemeketa can compete with the elite teams of the NWAC. To hold a 29-win team to 65 points on their home court is a testament to the Storm's defensive identity.
